Income tax doubles in St. Joseph County

"Our message is: today's the day they doubled the tax, so today's the day we start voting them out of office," said Citizens For Common Sense founder Carole "Kelly" Havens.

One side note: take a look at the headline. "Dozens protest" and then look at the second paragraph when it states, "about 50 taxpayers". Just getting tired of the liberal slant and innuendos offered by the Tribune.

SOUTH BEND — As St. Joseph County's new local income tax rate took effect Thursday, dozens of taxpayers gathered outside South Bend's County-City Building with a new rally cry: those who voted the tax in will soon be voted out of office.

About 50 taxpayers, led by the watchdog group "Citizens for Common Sense," held a "rally the troops" effort, signing up volunteers to go door to door this fall, targeting precincts in each St. Joseph County Council and South Bend Common Council district where elected officials voted in favor of a 0.95% increase in the county's local option income tax.

The previous rate was 0.8%, making St. Joseph County's new option income tax rate 1.75%.

"Our message is: today's the day they doubled the tax, so today's the day we start voting them out of office," said Citizens For Common Sense founder Carole "Kelly" Havens.

The new 1.75% rate makes St. Joseph County tied for the 17th highest local income tax rate among Indiana's 92 counties, and the third highest in the Michiana area, behind Fulton and Pulaski Counties.
