9/11 events planned throughout Michiana

Several local events are planned today to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

'Ringing of Bell' at St. Pat's park

SOUTH BEND — At 9 a.m. today, Clay Fire Territory will perform the "Ringing of the Bell" ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial in St. Patrick's County Park.


A memorial sculpture there commemorates the events of that day, and the site is a place for quiet contemplation.

9/11 and safety subject of talk

SOUTH BEND — Dan Lindley, associate professor of political science at Notre Dame, will talk about "9/11 — The 8th Anniversary: Are We Safer Now?" at 11:30 a.m. today at South Bend Chocolate Cafe, 122 S. Michigan St.

The event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters.

Patriot Day event set at Seitz Park

SOUTH BEND — A Patriot Day ceremony to honor the memory of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, will begin at 5 p.m. today at the Fallen Firefighters Memorial at Seitz Park on the East Race.

The South Bend Fire Department Honor Guard will lead the ceremony to honor the victims and heroes of the 9/11 attacks.

Pax Christi plans candlelight vigil

NILES — Victims of the 9/11 attacks will be in the prayers of participants at a candlelight vigil at 8:15 p.m. today on the boat dock at Riverfront Park downtown.

Arranged by members of Pax Christi Southwest Michigan, the ecumenical service will include a brief period of prayer and song.

VFW candlelight memorial service

SOUTH BEND — Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9820 will conduct a candlelight Everlasting Memorial Service at 7 p.m. today at the post at 4829 Linden Ave., South Bend.

VFW, AMVETS plan tribute at post

ROLLING PRAIRIE — Members of VFW Post 9423 and AMVETS Post 911 will pay tribute to comrades and first responders who died in the terrorist attacks.

The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. today around the front flagpole at the post at 4202 N. 400 E., Rolling Prairie.
